Stories from the farm

At freycinet marine farm we have been growing mussels for a long time. Over the years I have really started to enjoy them more and more. Something that we often get asked is; "If they don't open can you still eat them?"

Yes you can. When a mussel dies it will naturally loose its ability to stay closed as the mussel can no longer hold closed. So the mussels that you find in the bowl are sometimes the best. They just need a little bit of help, or you can put them back in the pot for a little longer to steam open.

When Julia and Giles Fisher purchased Freycinet Marine Farm in 2005 it marked the beginning of a wonderful journey; a journey with the aim of showcasing Tasmania's best seafood produce to the world, via our sales outlet on the Coles Bay Road.
